E-cigarettes tend to be a popular alternative to the conventional cigarette. While avoiding traditional smoke may be useful, there is still some risk to using these alternative cigarettes. And while e-cigarettes may not be great for your overall health, would you be surprised to learn that they can affect your oral health as well?

Unfortunately, e-cigarettes still allow nicotine into your body, and nicotine can—and will—contribute to receding gums, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Similarly, nicotine restricts blood flow to your gums, meaning they won’t receive enough oxygen—which can lead to a number of issues.

To make matters worse, the effects of nicotine can hide gum disease while simultaneously causing the problem. Nicotine will cause your gum disease to constrict, and since your gums won’t get enough oxygen, they won’t swell or bleed. This can make it difficult for you, and even for dental professionals, to recognize the symptoms of gum disease. This can be especially problematic because if gum disease isn’t treated quickly, you may suffer even more damage.

Finally, your jaw is very powerful, but it can be affected by the nicotine in an e-cigarette. In fact, nicotine can even cause you to grind your teeth, which can lead to a number of complications. Furthermore, E-cigarettes can also cause dry mouth, which can create a perfect habitat for bacteria to grow and form cavities.
